General plan for the Kuopio
Science Valley Kuopio, Finland Project 2000 The technology valley together with Savisaari and Niirala form the Savilahti area, that the city of Kuopio is aiming to develop into a forceful know-how centre for high technology. For the moment the University of Kuopio along with several research centres and high technology companies are located in the valley. The aim of design was to create a space between the faculties that joins together the separate buildings into a whole and gives character to the area. It may happen by means of supplementary building or landscape architecture. The facade to the main street would be formed with a structure tying together the individual buildings. It could be created by means of architecture, vegetation or visual arts. The landscape space between the faculties Canthia and Snellmania will be outlined with a pontoon bridge over the bay. A chain of four artificial islands will be designed there – one for each faculty (pharmacy, environmental sciences, medicine and social sciences). The South bank of the bay is sketched for a technology park, where building is concentrated in four zones. The spaces between the densely built 'fingers' are planted with variety of native plants thus forming park areas. A ten-floor landmark building is located at the edge of a street facade in the corner of Savilahdentie and Neulaniementie streets. Its volume would be more compact towards the centre of the campus but it would open up like a book to the driveway in the South. |
